Panipat’s Costume Designer Neeta Lulla On Similarities With Bajirao Mastani: ‘Can’t Change History To Make Costumes Look Different’
Ever since the first look posters and trailer of Ashutosh Gowariker’s Panipat hit the internet, it has got everything talking about it. While a lot of people lauded Arjun Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Sanjay Dutt’s spectacular performances; there is also a section of people that noticed a few uncanny similarities with that of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. As per the netizens, the costumes used in Panipat have been inspired by that of Ranveer Singh starrer Bajirao Mastani.  (ALSO READ - Panipat: Kriti Sanon’s First Look As Parvati Bai Inspired By Priyanka Chopra’s Kashibai From Bajirao Mastani?)

Now, in a conversation with Mid Day, the costume designer of Panipat – Neeta Lulla – shared her justification on the same and addressed all the comparisons. The popular designer stated that since Panipat is based in the same era as Bajirao Mastani, she can’t do anything about the similarities “How do I change the references? Sadashivrao Bhau (Kapoor’s character) is the nephew of Bajirao Peshwa. Parvati Bai (Sanon’s character) is Sadashivrao’s wife. I cannot change history to make the costumes look different,” said Lulla.

Further, Neeta added that to ace Arjun Kapoor’s look as Sadashiv Rao Bhau, her team got the required material from across the country and for Kriti’s look as Parvati Bai, they sourced saris from mostly Pune and Kolhapur. “We picked up sarees from Kolhapur and Pune, and then I mixed [the prints] and re-stitched them. We added special touches to her hairdo by way of clips that bore figures of birds and butterflies,” she added.

As soon as the Panipat trailer got unveiled, it gave birth to a lot of memes and comparisons. Check out a few of them below:
